Premature Ejaculation Pushed Plethora into Profit

Pharmaceutical firm Plethora have managed to claw back from serious debts to post 9million in pre-tax profits, thanks to a licensing deal for their premature ejaculation treatment. As predicted by market pundits in January, Plethora have signed a deal with a U.S based company, Shionogi Pharma (who previously were known as Sciele Pharma) to license their experimental treatment PSD502.
The treatment is a proprietary topical agent designed to reduce premature ejaculation, a condition suffered by some 25 to 30% of all men at some time in their lives. The company are hopeful that with only one medication, Jansen-Cillik’s Priligy pill, having been approved by the FDA they is a significant market for an effective treatment.
The Priligy makers would probably take some issue however with Plethora’s claims that there is ‘no globally approved and effective pharmaceutical treatment for this condition’. While in essence true, Priligy has already been approved in various European countries and New Zealand and is waiting for a decision from the FDA and other European healthcare regulators.
Even if both products are approved, there is still the potential for both to rake in very hefty profits. Products that treat erectile dysfunction have proved extremely profitable for drugs companies. When Viagra, manufactured by Pfizer, went on sale it proved a huge best seller for the company, and even the advent of Eli Lilly’s Cialis didn’t overly dent profits.
At the moment many men who suffer from premature ejaculation are resorting to the internet, where a host of companies are promising to solve all their problems. There are companies which offer desensetising sprays which generally are ineffective and have not been through clinical trials. Many men have reported finding premature ejaculation an extremely embarrassing and distressing condition to suffer from. The stigma attached to it means that many are reluctant to visit their doctors for help.
GPs can however assist, as they have access to counselling services. In a significant number of cases of persistant premature ejaculation therapy can be of help, though again many are reluctant to take this approach.
Plethora do seem to be coming closer however to a medical solution. In clinical trials their product helped men suffering from the condition increase erection time after penetration from 1 minute to an average of 4.9 minutes, compared to 1.6 minutes amongst those given a placebo.
They have seen their market value rise after an initial drop and their executive officer Steven Powell said that he hopes that future royalties could further increase the market worth of the company.
